Hey there! We're Oglofus, a software company based in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and we're looking for a Junior Software Developer who wants to actually enjoy their work while learning a ton along the way.
We're not going to bore you with corporate speak or pretend we're changing the world with every line of code. What we ARE doing is building genuinely useful software for our clients, and we need someone who's excited about learning, isn't afraid to try new things, and wants the freedom to grow in different directions.
Most junior developer jobs stick you in a corner with one language and repetitive tasks. Not here. We work with all sorts of tech - Go, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, C++, Rust, and even Unity and Unreal Engine for game development.
Your day-to-day will vary (which keeps things interesting): Building web applications that real people use; Working on mobile apps when projects call for it; Getting your hands dirty with game development if you're into that; Learning from our senior devs who actually enjoy teaching (not just delegating); Contributing ideas that we'll genuinely listen to; Writing code you can be proud of, not just rushing to meet impossible deadlines.
We care more about your attitude than your experience: You genuinely enjoy coding (even if you're still learning); You're curious and always asking "how does this work?" or "what if we tried..."; You can work well with others (we're a small team, so no room for egos); You're comfortable with remote work and can manage your own time; You have some programming knowledge (doesn't matter which language - we can teach you the rest).
We genuinely don't care if you have a CS degree or if you're self-taught. We've seen brilliant developers come from all backgrounds.
Flexible working that's actually flexible - We're fully remote, but if you want to meet up in Newcastle occasionally, we've got space for that too. Time to explore and learn - we give you 20% of your time to work on your own projects or learn something new. Real mentorship - Our senior devs and our CTO aren't just managers - they still code every day and genuinely enjoy helping juniors level up.
Decent benefits without the fluff: £32,000 - £38,000 starting salary; £2,500 yearly to spend on courses, books, conferences; Proper equipment - MacBook or PC, your choice, plus £1,200 for your home office setup; 28 days holiday plus your birthday off; Private health insurance including mental health support; Money for conferences and workshops.
You won't be stuck doing the same thing forever. Want to learn Go after mastering Python? Go for it. Curious about game development? We've got Unreal Engine and Unity projects. Interested in mobile development? We'll help you get there.
You're not just building features that go live; you get to see real users interact with them, and learn from what works and what doesn't.
We are a small company. That means you'll have real impact and responsibility early on, but it also means we can't offer everything a big corp can. If you want a rigid career ladder and corporate training programs, we're probably not for you.
But if you want to: Learn by doing real work (with support when you need it); Try different technologies without being pigeonholed; Have your ideas heard and implemented; Work with people who are genuinely passionate about code; Build your skills faster than you would at a big company, then we should talk.
