Anthropic is building AI systems that are safe, beneficial, and transformative. This role focuses on developing Claude Design, a new product that lets users create polished visual work using AI. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will build and ship core frontend surfaces, collaborate with research teams, set technical direction on challenging frontend problems, run experiments, ensure high product quality, strengthen integration with Claude Code, and lead a small engineering team. Skills

  • 8+ years of experience building full-stack applications with deep frontend strength
  • Zero-to-one work in startup or startup-like environments
  • Set technical direction for a team or workstream and mentored other engineers
  • Strong design sensibility and high bar for craft; detail oriented
  • Strong technical skills across modern web stacks (React, TypeScript, Node.js, Python, Go, etc.)
  • Comfortable working in a fast-moving environment
  • Deep user-centric approach, validate ideas with users
  • Strong opinions loosely, advocate but open to evidence
  • Generalist between frontend, backend, product
  • Independent judgment
  • Effective communication translating complex AI capabilities
  • Care about societal impacts and ethics

Responsibilities

  • Build and ship Claude Design's core surfaces (design canvas, real-time editing, inline comments, live adjustment controls)
  • Collaborate closely with research teams to turn frontier vision into intuitive design experiences
  • Work directly with designers, internal test users, and external partners to gather feedback, iterate quickly, and validate product concepts
  • Set technical direction for the hardest frontend problems: editor and canvas architecture, real-time collaboration, design-system inference, rich import/export, performance at scale
  • Design and run experiments to test product hypotheses
  • Own the quality bar for product look and feel, prioritizing latency, responsiveness, and reliability
  • Strengthen the handoff to Claude Code so designs translate cleanly into production, and feed insights back to research
  • Operate as a technical leader on a small team: shape roadmap, make architecture decisions, mentor engineers
